Active Math Lesson Starter - Mental Math - Outdoor Activity
Start your math lessons outdoors with this FREE fun activity where your class will get into groups following different criteria, for example getting into even numbered groups.
This activity works well if you get the students running around until they hear a whistle (or similar), they must then stop and wait for the instructions before getting into the correctly sized groups. Students who are left out must then check all of the groups to see if they are correct.

Leaf sorting is a fun activity where your class will go outside to collect some leaves before sorting them into groups according to their properties. It’s a good way to introduce your class to some simple data handling as well as developing their skills to sort items into groups by looking closely at their features and shape. Guess The Length - Estimation, Measurement, and Differences
Estimation, measuring and subtraction - this activity has it all! Your class will choose an object, estimate the length, measure the correct length and then see how close their estimation is by working out the difference.
This activity can be differentiated by asking students to use different units of measurement as well as measuring and estimating to a whole number, or one or two decimal places.
To give students an extra challenge we have included a sheet where they must convert between measurements within the activity.

Playground Battleships - Outdoor Coordinate Lesson
Playground Battleships is a great way to learn about, or recap finding coordinates on a one quadrant grid.
In pairs your class will play a large scale version of Battleships by drawing a grid using chalk and then using natural objects or chalk to keep track of when and where their ships have been hit.

This place value activity contains 4 differentiated coloring worksheets for looking at the value of hundreds, tens, and units. Students must figure out what each number is worth in both three and two-digit numbers, coloring in the correct about of blocks to represent each number. Each worksheet also contains two challenge questions where they must split the answer to complete the additions.
